Helping a stranded motorist when en route is a thought many drivers might have, but are not always able to act on. Whether driving under time pressure or not wanting to cause a traffic incident while trying to help, many people choose to keep moving and rely on another individuals assistance.
But sometimes, a highway hero is there to remind everyone of the difference that can be made by stopping.
On the morning of July 21, David Price and his wife, Melanie, found themselves in quite an unfortunate situation: she was going into labor in their car. Unsure what to do, David tried to flag down another motorist.
A New Jersey truck driver was on his way home after delivering freight in Baltimore, and stopped when he saw the panicked man waving on the side of the road. Little did the couple know they couldnt have asked for a better person to stop than Michael Hawthorne.
No stranger to roadside emergencies, Hawthorne has twice received the Highway Angel award for his heroic assistance. He has already helped a man who had a heart attack and another who collapsed from heat exhaustion. And in 1999, he delivered a baby at a California truck stop using skills he learned watching his mother and grandmother help with deliveries while growing up in rural Missouri.
Seeing a familiar situation and a new father uncertain of what needed to be done Hawthorne went to work. He covered his body and donned gloves to ensure cleanliness. Once the baby was born, he tied her umbilical cord with the laces of a new pair of shoes, a maneuver the EMTs commended once they arrived.
Mother and baby Jennifer Lynn Price were escorted to the hospital, where they recovered well, in great thanks to their highway hero. In response to his assistance, Hawthorne is a true Good Samaritan who simply says, I do what any normal person that has a conscience and has morals would do.
This story is a powerful reminder of the importance of offering help when we can and where we find need. But, I want to know your opinion:
Have you stopped to help stranded motorists?
Have you ever been stranded and needed to rely on other drivers aid?
Is finding Good Samaritans harder these days?
