Trucking Companies: Reduce Costs Before Raising Rates

The need to control costs is one of the biggest challenges drivers and small trucking companies face. Before you raise your rates, you need to be sure you’ve done everything possible to reduce your costs of doing business. But the danger in making cost cuts randomly as they come to your attention can be, in many cases, worse than not cutting costs at all. Rather than making arbitrary reductions, the most efficient means to cut costs is to do a Line Item Cost Analysis. Don’t let the terminology scare you — this analysis is not as complicated as the title sounds.

We’re moving closer to the fourth quarter of 2011, and business is somewhat stagnant for many of us in the trucking industry. For Getloaded member Randy Stroup, trucking is a passion, as well as a profession. As President of First Class Services, Inc., Stroup has built a trucking company known for reliability — and awesome rigs. In fact, one of their trucks just dominated the Custom Rigs Pride and Polish National Championship at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas.

On August 27, their 1986 Peterbilt 359, aptly named “First in Class,” won not one — but four — categories in the competition:
